(NEW YORK) – As millions of children return to school this fall, “World News Tonight” followed three incredible teachers who care for students inside and outside the classroom .

In Washington DC, Imani Baucom teaches at the Bilingual Public Charter School. She said the safety of her students comes first.

“The kids are really happy to be back… Walk to class. Masks, ”said Baucom. “We just remember to put kids first, put our health first and take it one day at a time.”

With some students and teachers returning to in-person learning in the midst of the pandemic, some adjustments need to be made.

World news tonight previously reported that Jennifer Martin, who lives outside of Austin, Texas, has turned her garage into a library. With the help of viewers of “World News Tonight”, she has now collected over 4,000 books and 350 students have visited her library.

“Thank you to supporters across the country,” said Martin. “It’s important to continue this effort because once you develop a drive. A reader needs books in order to read.

Across the country, in Livermore, Calif., Heidi Robinson went the extra mile – literally.

Robinson, who teaches at Marylin Avenue Elementary School, had delivered door-to-door lesson plans during the pandemic and sent his students plenty of virtual hugs along the way.

Almost a year and a half later, Robinson reports that the class is back together.

“We are back to school full time! Wearing masks so that we are all very safe, ”said Robinson.

Robinson said virtual hugs have been replaced by elbows and she hopes the progress will only continue.

“We are incredibly happy to be back to school,” she said. “With challenges behind us and a lot of hope ahead of us.”
