Suspect killed after police officer shot dead in Long Branch, NJ



LONG BRANCH – A homicide investigation turned fatal over the weekend when police visited an apartment with a warrant and encountered a man who started shooting at them, beating an officer, prosecutors said.

The shooter was eventually killed by police after a standoff of several hours.

Officials said that on Friday evening, while police were in Apartment 1 at 274 Chelsea Avenue, a man entered the room and opened fire, hitting a police officer in the leg.

Officers withdrew and the man barricaded himself until officers said gunshots erupted inside the apartment at around 2 a.m.

The man came out as he fired his gun and police responded, prosecutors said.

One of the police shots hit the man, who was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene, according to the state attorney general’s office, which regularly investigates shootings involving police.

The officer who was shot was released from the hospital on Friday evening.

State officials said the original warrant involved a homicide investigation, but they have not publicly disclosed other details, including the name of the man who was killed.
