Metropolitan commercial radio stations saw a solid 10.0% increase in advertising revenue in the December quarter, according to data compiled by Milton Data and released by ARC today.
Milton recorded advertising revenue of $185.397 million in December, compared to $168.525 million in December 2020.
“The December quarter radio advertising revenue results marked a positive end to 2021,” said ARC Chief Executive Officer Joan Warner. “We also saw 16.3% growth in total revenue this calendar year, which is very good news.”
“Factors in this period such as more positive consumer sentiment, demand driven by lifting of lockdown restrictions, opening of borders and pre-Christmas advertiser rush attributed to fourth quarter results.”
Melbourne had the largest advertising revenue in the December quarter, up 14.0% year-on-year to $58.928 million, followed by Perth which rose 12.3% to $25.084 million.
Brisbane rose 8.8% to $29.899 million, while Sydney rose 8.3% to $55.144 million, followed by Adelaide which rose 1.4% to $16.342 million.
In December 2021, the five main markets of Australian capitals recorded a rise of 9.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. Ad revenue totaled just over $56 million from $51.3 million in December 2020.
Melbourne stations once again performed well, generating $18.410 million in ad revenue for the month, up 15.3% from a year ago.
Perth stations climbed 10.9% to $7.653 million, Brisbane rose 9.5% to $8.945 million and Sydney revenue rose 5.8%, generating $16.152 million in revenue .
However, Adelaide saw a 3.1% decline from a year ago, with advertising revenue totaling $4.849 million.
