Media Advisory – Black Creek Community Health Center workers strike at Dunsmore Law

TORONTO, July 9, 2021 / CNW / – Striking Black Creek Community Health Center workers will picket the Dunsmore Law office on Monday, July 12 to protest the law firm’s bad faith bargaining practices.

Members of OPSEU / OPSEU Local 5117 who work at the Black Creek Community Health Center have been on strike since June 12, after many grueling months of failed talks. Healthcare workers have been forced into a strike position because of their executive director Cheryl Prescod denying workers the one percent wage increases allowed until Bill 124.

Dunsmore Law, the legal representation for the community health center, has repeatedly delayed negotiations by delaying talks, walking away from the table without warning and undermining working relationships.

“Dunsmore took the taxpayers on what I understand is a $ 800-an hour of unnecessary conflict, ”said OPSEU / OPSEU president Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “This is money that could be used for frontline health care and to provide a 1% pay rise to OPSEU / OPSEU members who devote 100% of their energy to helping the community. We could have struck a deal already if it weren’t for this greedy law firm’s desire to put billable hours ahead of people’s health. “
