Louisiana soldier, woman killed in shooting

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) – A Louisiana state soldier was killed by a man who officials said also killed another person and injured three others in several parishes, state police said .

Master Trooper Adam Gaubert, a 19-year veteran of the force, was ambushed in his patrol vehicle near Prairieville on Saturday, according to a press release from Louisiana State Police. The suspect, Matthew Mire, 31, was taken into custody that night after a day-long manhunt.

“(Gaubert) has served selflessly and courageously to keep our people and communities safe, and he represents the best of us all,” Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said in a statement on Sunday.

The soldier was found dead near the site of another murder. Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre said Mire shot and killed Pamela Adair, 37, in a house around 3 a.m. on Saturday before fleeing. Authorities said they had reason to believe she was Mire’s half-sister, but her motive for shooting her was not immediately clear. He also shot a man who was taken to hospital, the sheriff said.

In Livingston Parish, authorities said Mire shot two people – a man and a woman – in a trailer park on Highway 444. MPs said the man was shot in the arm and the woman was shot in the arm and leg around midnight on Saturday. These two victims are expected to survive, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities believe Mire shot another state soldier as he fled in East Baton Rouge parish. The soldier was not injured, but his police car was damaged by bullets.

Mire was taken to a local hospital with injuries resulting from a police dog bite and a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg. Soldiers monitor him at the medical center and he will be reserved for his release.

Mire could not be immediately reached for comment on Sunday.

State detectives have obtained arrest warrants on charges including the first degree murder of a police officer in Ascension Parish. In the parish of East Baton Rouge, they obtained arrest warrants for attempted first degree murder and aggravated flight of an officer.
