Kīhei Elementary expands its partnership with Discovery Education

Kīhei Elementary School partnered with Discovery Education in 2020, before the pandemic. The company provides digital and print resources for the K-12 curriculum in STEM, social studies, and more.

“In a post-COVID world, educators are challenged more than ever to create engaging learning experiences for all students,” said Kīhei Elementary School Principal Tracy Lui.

The ability to engage students ultimately helps teachers create lessons for their classes.

“There are quiz features. There are professional learning tools. There are creative spaces for teachers and students to create lessons or create projects,” said Jeff Rothberg, lead coordinator of Discovery Education for national partnerships.

“Specifically in Hawaii, there’s a lot of Hawaiian culture [and] Hawaiian history is integrated into our resource as we try to reach the whole world at once.”

Rothberg tells HPR that Kīhei Elementary came to his company because they were looking for a science program.

Now they’re expanding to include the company’s latest resource, Mystery Science, which furthers the company’s goal of helping educators and students.

“Educators and students have more resources to work with and more tools to easily create and explore in our dynamic learning environment,” Rothberg said.

“All of these resources are filled with hands-on, real-world activities, where our students are principal investigators, asking questions, and being curious. So they don’t just learn and read about science, and ‘write to the teacher. They’re there as scientists, exploring, navigating and having fun with it.’

Rothberg says Discovery Education helps a handful of public schools in the state.
