Urban Meyer said last week that there was “no chance” he would take the vacant USC Trojans football coach position. But it looks like the Jacksonville Jaguars first-year head coach could leave the NFL after 2021, according to a report released Sunday by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
On CBS The NFL Today, La Canfora briefly discussed potential USC candidates, including the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator. Eric Bieniémy and former head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles Doug pederson. However, La Canfora also mentioned that Meyer may not have been entirely offside.
“Urban Meyer says he’s not interested either, but a lot of his fellow coaches think it could be done in Jacksonville, âLa Canfora said.
Les Troyens sacked their head coach for six years Helton clay after their Week 2 loss to Stanford. Meanwhile, they rebounded with a Saturday, 45-14 victory in Washington state.
“No chance,” Meyer told reporters Wednesday regarding the USC job. “I am here. I am determined to try to build an organization.”
This is not the first time Meyer’s name has been linked to the post at USC since he left varsity coach after the 2018 season. In 2019, Meyer’s name was linked to the post under pressure. the sports director of the Trojans Mike Bohn to replace Helton after Bohn was hired in the fall. Meyer, at the time, was employed as a college football analyst for FOX Sports. This saga finally came to an end, however, when Bohn announced that the program would move forward under Helton’s leadership for the time being.
Whether Meyer would ultimately be interested in USC remains to be seen. According to La Canfora and CBS Sports NFL columnist Pete Prisco, however, Meyer has not been completely successful within the Jaguars organization.
“He already has everyone looking over their shoulders,” a source with first-hand knowledge of day-to-day operations in Jacksonville told La Canfora. “He gets off balance too easily and he doesn’t know how to handle defeat, even in the preseason. He loses it and wants to get back to the drills himself. It’s not good.”
âYou can’t panic about preseason games and belittle your coaches – with a staff you’ve handpicked – every time things don’t go as planned. It won’t work here,â he said. another source told La Canfora.

“I heard he struggled last week just because he lost his first preseason game,” Prisco told CBS Sports Radio’s Damon Amendolara. “This is not an attitude you have to have in the NFL. So he has to change some things. He’s brought to the (franchise) a lot of college-like things that I don’t necessarily think I agree with. Heard some players weren’t thrilled with him either, including having a microphone on the pitch – one of his assistants on the pitch during practice with a boom mic telling the guys to hydrate, to jostle and move on to the next period. “
