Hardaway: NIL rules help hire the best class in Memphis. WGN 720 radio

Penny Hardaway believes the new name, image and portrait rules have landed another top recruiting class in Memphis.

Hardaway said Tuesday that the NIL rules help ease the burden on players considering making money by going to the G League or college in the NBA. Hardaway can now add NIL options when aggressively marketing what he, his staff, and his alma mater are building.

“You can now come to college, get a deal for yourself, and learn and develop at the same time,” Hardaway said. “You don’t have to go to another level to get it.”

Hardaway, who had the No. 1 recruiting first class in 2019, lost five-star goalie Jalen Green to the G League in 2020 after the NBA’s first round pick was mesmerized by money and approval opportunities. I did. Hardaway has revealed that he disagrees with the way the G League approached a potential player.

Thanks to the new NIL rules, this off-season was not a problem.

Hardaway convinced Memphis to join former NBA coach Larry Brown and hired 16-year-old veteran and NBA champion Rasheed Wallace.

He also completed a recruiting class led by a pair of two-player five-star rookies, Emoji Bates and Jayren Duren, who were reclassified from 2022 to 2021, and the second recruit into the American Athletic Conference program. I won the class.

The Hardaway sidekick, advertising for Nike’s shoes, was also followed by Lil Penny. Lil Penny appeared in a photo posted to social media during an official visit to Memphis when Bates posed in a Tigers uniform.

The Michigan natives first made a commitment to Tom Izzo and Michigan last year before changing their minds. The 6-foot-8 guards are called generational talents and are expected to be number one overall when they qualify for the NBA Draft in 2023 after turning 19.

He considered Oregon and the G League before signing for Memphis and Hardaway.

Hardaway joked in the photo and it was Lil Penny’s idea to come out of retirement.

“It’s part of who I am, what we do, how I named him in the industry, the NBA, marketing and his nature. It stands to reason that Lil Penny is here, ”said Hardaway. “It’s part of my story, and it’s also interesting.

After all, Hardaway believes the basketball team beat Bates and Durene even though Memphis hasn’t reached the NCAA tournament since 2014. Memphis will make three of the top five scorers for the team that won the championship. NIT last spring.

“They really knew what they wanted from this basketball,” said Hardaway. “And to be around the wonderful hearts of development, education, understanding and people is what they really wanted.”

Wallace is keen to help the Tigers get all the money they can make from the NIL rules. He said the former NBA player helped pave the way for the amount paid when he arrived in the league.

“Now we’ve paved the way for this generation to get the dollars they earn,” Wallace said. “That is to say, everything is closely linked. So I want to see the young men get this money, so I can’t bring this knowledge to the grave with me. And if I did, it would be unfair to the basketball world and the basketball gods. “
